Blur Bassist Gets Cheesy
by Ian and Pete
9/27/2006 03:10:00 PM
I found this on TripWire who found it in a column in The Independent who quoted Blur's bassist Damon Albarn's desire to start his own cheese company:

"The more I think about cheese the more I like it and the more I want some," Albarn said in the column. "Which is why I'm taking matters into my own hands and venturing into the world of independent cheese making. My heart always beats a little bit faster in the cheese aisle of a French supermarket. The Italians, too, eat more cheese than us, as do the Danes. Danish cheese is not as well known, but well worth exploring."

Pretty cool.

Now It's Overhead Release New Record
by Ian and Pete
9/12/2006 11:40:00 AM
Now It's Overhead
"Walls"
Grade: B+

Now It's Overhead just released their new record Dark Light Daybreak (Saddle Creek) today and with it the best song they've released as a group. Andy LeMaster's vocal work is the best it's ever been and he is proving himself to be more and more creative with every release. "Walls" is a great example of the band's ability to rock without comprimising their artful approach to songwriting.

So I am sad that I didn't post this last night because Pitchfork posted it this morning, but it is still worth seeing. l love Big Black and have never seen them live, so this was a treat for me and hopefully for you too. This is "Racer X" performed live at the Touch & Go 25th Anniversary show.

Arab Strap Breaks Up
by Ian and Pete
9/08/2006 02:31:00 PM
Another great band has clocked out. This summer seems to be the summer of indie bands going under and gas prices holding them down.

In a press release sent out by Chemikal Underground (AB's label), Aiden Moffat explained, "There's no animosity, no drama. We simply feel we've run our course. The Last Romance seems the most obvious and logical final act of the Arab Strap studio adventure. Everybody likes a happy ending." Malcolm Middleton also stated that "The idea of the compilation is to capture the essence of the band over our ten year career. Sometimes the albums were a bit stifled because we were worrying too much about making a good album. I think that live versions of songs and b-sides etc show a truer, more relaxed side to the band. Ten Years Of Tears can serve both as an introduction to Arab Strap and also a fitting finale to those people who have followed us along the way."

Hot New Band: The Klaxons
by Ian and Pete
9/08/2006 02:24:00 PM
The Klaxons
"Atlantis To Interzone"
Grade: B

Emerging just when brit-dance-punk looks like it may evolve into the mainstream, The Klaxons caught me off-guard when I stumbled upon this download on the interblogiverse. Not only do they have a new EP called Xan Valleys on the way for October 10, all of their songs are sci-fi based, which of course means I dig it.

Check it here.

Pitchfork Slams Tapes 'n Tapes
by Ian and Pete
9/07/2006 09:01:00 PM
I know, whatever. Pitchfork published this on Tuesday and gave TNT's new 7" (which I am totally going to buy) 2.5 stars out of 5:

"OK, now the Wire comparisons make a little more sense. A once mad-paced acoustic number becomes more detached, economical electro, starting from scratch but keeping the structure. The original rhythm stays, but a few heavily-compressed chords replace the original's hokey strum. A horror-show keyboard hovers like a dentist's drill in the background, and a few terse octaves play hokey-pokey in the bridge-- all minimal additions made essential from the sparseness of the new arrangement. All that would save a better song, but "Cowbell" is by far my least favorite of TNT's, a high-energy go-nowhere jam with none of the inscrutable references or patchwork charm of the rest of their debut. The remix is even more energy, and better ideas, headed to the same place."

For the record, this is my favorite Tapes 'n Tapes song, which leads me to believe that Pitchfork knows nothing. Well, not nothing, but they're scrapping the bottom of the pot. Do ignore the Pitchfork idiocy brothers Tapes, we at least know you're awesome.

Love Is All Return To The States
by Ian and Pete

10.27 New York, NY - Knitting Factory (double-header)
10.28 Montreal, Quebec - Main Hall

However, they are in Glasgow, Scotland on September 15, and if Pete can get on the trolly, he could fly there for $50. Do it Pete, do it.

Paris Hilton Gets Punk'd?
by Ian and Pete
9/06/2006 07:22:00 PM
It's true. The fem-de-glam and jetsetters was punked. Wow, about time. The British street artist Banksy made 500 mock-ups of Hilton's new album and distributed them in record stores throughout the United Kingdom (they have some foul phrases and artwork newly added thanks to Banksy). There is no actual "Punk'd" moment, but, it's still worth seeing.

Check it out here.
