The Hold Steady Are Out To Conquer The World, Interweb
by Ian and Pete
8/31/2006 11:46:00 AM
For some reason Pitchfork reported on this today, saying that it was an "Exclusive," but I don't buy it because I knew about it on Monday. So I'm going to report on it now, non-exclusively.

I'm not exactly sure why at this point, and I'll let you know when I do, but The Hold Steady have launched a video confessional website (www.boysandgirlsinamerica.com). Here's the official statement:

"Boys and Girls in America.

This whole album is about guys, girls, love, and growing up in america. We want to you know about what you think about the opposite sex, relationships, love, the whole shebang.
We want to see you!

We want you to make a video testimonial. Post about your life, your loves, your high's, and your lows. Your first date to your worst date. Your party fouls and your massive nights. Show us what you got!"

Wow. In other news, their new record Boys and Girls In America (like the site), will be out on October 3 off of Vagrant Records. And prior to that, the homeboys are touring like crazy, here are the dates (Notice two dates in Minneapolis, so you have no excuse not to go):

Along with the hot little collectors item, the brothers Tapes will be releasing a music video for the very same song. And ah? What's that you ask? Where can I see this video?

"The Smashing Pumpkins are currently in the recording studio with legendary producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, The Cars, The Darkness), at work on their first new album since 1999."

The band is back together in full force. I'm a little worried, but, well. Yeah.

Stnnng Ready Fake Fake
by Pete Farrell
8/10/2006 09:27:00 AM
Okay, we're a little behind the ball on this news update, but even the great ones slip up. Remember when Jordan rocked the 45 and the Bulls got owned by the Magic in the second round and everyone said MJ was done? Next season, the Bulls go 72-10 proceed to win three consecutive NBA championships. We're more Timberpup than '96 Bulls, but still, the analogy holds together: we won't let the STNNNG out of our sight again, especially since the band will be releasing its new full length, Fake Fake, in November of 2006. Furthermore, the STNNNG are going to drop the album at the 4th Annual Lunch Show at the 7th Street Entry on Nov. 18. If that's not exciting enough, Signal to Trust will also drop their as-yet-untitled new longplayer on the same day, at the same show. Hot.

New Shins Album Delayed...Again
by Pete Farrell
8/10/2006 09:11:00 AM
Expecting some new Shins material to change your life in 2006? Too bad. The band has pushed back the release of its third album for the third time, but a recent news update on their website promises it will be well worth the wait: "We can't leak any details, but we have never been more happy with anything that we've ever recorded before. And we can definitely say that it is due to the fact that we've been given so much time to perfect it. The record is the best we've ever done. We hope that you will agree." The album is now schedule for a first quarter '07 release.

Clearly, the Shins don't adhere to the ever-popular "take quick advantage of possible fame and mainstream success" school of business. It's been three years since Chutes too Narrow came out and two years since the Garden State Soundtrack infiltrated female hearts across the country. Sliver eagerly anticipates the triumphant return of The Shins and a new Zach Braff movie to pimp the hell out of them Seth Cohen style.

Death From Above 1979 Breaks Up
by Ian Anderson
8/04/2006 01:24:00 PM
According to a post made on their official website, DFA1979 has called it a day.

The post reads: "I know it's been forever since I wrote anything on here. I'm sure by now most of you assume the band isn't happening anymore since there are no shows, no work on a new album, etc. Well I wanted to let you know that your assumptions are correct. We decided to stop doing the band... actually we decided that almost a year ago."

"We started as a punk band with pop aspirations and we met every goal we set for ourselves. A few weeks ago, the album finally went gold in Canada and that was the final mark I really wanted to reach."

"Over the last 3 years of touring, Sebastien and I had grown apart to such an extent that the only real time we spoke was just before we would play and during interviews. We both changed so much that the people we were by the end of it, probably wouldn't have been friends if they were to meet for the first time again. It's a totally normal function of growing up."

"It would be more sad if we stopped changing and growing and kept playing the same songs for 40 years like the Rolling Stones. For me that would be a nightmare."

Hot New Band: Belaire
by Ian Anderson
8/02/2006 03:58:00 PM
Belaire
"Back Into The Wall"
Grade: A

The Austin, Texas native Belaire have stolen our hearts, big time. Combining warm synths and sunny pop melodies, the all-star team band has put together something really great. A little bit like Rad Zapping Hockey Night, but maybe with a little leg.

Download "Back Into The Wall" here.

Download the New Zutons Track Here
by Ian Anderson
8/02/2006 03:43:00 PM
"Why Won't You Give Me Your Love"
The Zutons
Grade: B

The production value has gone up, but it's still just pretty straightforward: zippy, four-on-the-floor 60s rock. The lyrics leave something to be desired, but the Zutons' professionalism carries the song.

Check it out, it's pretty cool. Download it here.
